Luciano Spalletti is only the third man after Antonio Conte and Helenio Herrera to go straight from winning the Serie A title to taking the reins of the Italy squad.

The coach makes his debut this evening in a EURO 2024 qualifier against North Macedonia.

That kicks off in Skopje at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

This qualifying phase had been started by Roberto Mancini with three points from two games against England and Malta, then there was a break for Nations League fixtures.

Mancini resigned on August 13 and Spalletti was appointed on September 1, having left Napoli after the Scudetto victory.

In so doing, Spalletti becomes only the third coach to go straight from the Serie A title to the Italy job.

The most recent was Conte, who left Juventus one day into pre-season training in the summer of 2014.

Before that, going all the way back to 1966, Herrera went from celebrating the 1965-66 Scudetto at Inter to becoming a joint Italy boss with Ferruccio Valcareggi.
