Luciano Spalletti explains he’s not interested in the Italy job, as he’d miss day-to-day coaching.

It was announced this week that current Azzurri CT Antonio Conte will step down after Euro 2016, but the Roma Coach won’t be stepping into his shoes.

“I like being a Coach [rather than CT],” Spalletti told reporters in his pre-Inter Press conference.

“I tried switching off but I couldn't, I felt compelled to come back. If I can do that somewhere I like, then it's even better.

“I tried switching off but I couldn't, I felt compelled to come back. If I can do that somewhere I like, then it's even better.

“Once you've got these two components, what you think about is the result. Planning is fine when you're calm and you have the right conditions to sit and think.

“But now I’m going through a period which is well past that stage. I don't want to give people any doubts and I won't talk of anything but the situation of this campaign.

“We must come third at least, and then try and close the gap with the others if they drop points.”

Spalletti also gave an update on Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman, who is battling back from a series of knee injuries.

“He’s getting better day-by-day. He’s always getting more angry, he has a face which strikes fear into everyone, even before a training match.

“He’s growing in that regard, and it’s spectacular. He’s very close to regaining all of his qualities.

“It’s clear that after that he’ll need some real games where he encounters real game situations. He’ll have to compete with the rest of the team for that, because they’re all doing well.

“Strootman will be back on the pitch when someone falls below their level.”
