Luciano Spalletti admits “it was not a good performance” as Roma were held by Verona. “There’s a lot of work to do.”

The Coach replaced Rudi Garcia this week and Radja Nainggolan had opened the scoring, but Giampaolo Pazzini converted a penalty for the 1-1 result.

“It was not a good performance, but at least the team did try,” Spalletti told Mediaset Premium.

“There were scoring opportunities we did not take and it is certainly a difficult result to accept, but there are some positives. I saw real effort and the team was disappointed at the end. They tried to do what we had discussed, so there’s a lot of work to do.”

Edin Dzeko again missed a couple of sitters and was jeered by the home fans.

“When you play at a big club and are going through a difficult moment, it becomes highlighted. We spent a lot of money on Dzeko and we can help him through this difficult time.

“Today we suffered three or four counter-attacks, which is the one thing we were determined would not happen. Miralem Pjanic did well to maintain his position, but he still marked too much with his back to the player, not anticipating the move.

"We lost the ball too often in midfield, but not because we were trying to play our way out, it was because we went for the counter and were far too frenetic.

“We have a lot of work to do. We also had the three-man defence at the end, because a side like Roma has to be able to change and take on different attitudes.

“If we are able to make our technical quality count, then the physical fitness levels aren’t too much of an issue. We have to make the ball and our opponents work harder than we do. Instead, too many mistakes highlight the problems we’ve got at the moment.”
