Luciano Spalletti has urged Roma to stick with Paulo Fonseca, who has ‘brought the discussion of attacking football back to the forefront’ in Serie A.

Fonseca is reportedly under increasing pressure after back-to-back defeats, which have left Roma 12 points outside the Champions League places.

Fonseca is reportedly under increasing pressure after back-to-back defeats, which have left Roma 12 points outside the Champions League places.

However, Spalletti – one of his Giallorossi’s predecessors – made it clear Italian football needed more coaches like the 46-year-old to prosper.

“I’ve always been attracted to attacking football,” he told Serie A’s official YouTube channel.

“I’m always studying ways to play football, where you score goals, where you’re always asking questions of your opponents.

“I feel Fonseca has brought the discussion of attacking football back to the forefront.

“He wants to attack and he’s clear about how to carry it out. He’s also been good at immediately adapting to our league because he’s reacted to changing circumstances.

“If they let him work, he’ll always give Roma’s demanding and knowledgeable fanbase very enjoyable matches.”

The former Inter boss also had praise for Edin Dzeko, who has similarly been linked with moving on this summer.

“Dzeko has all the characteristics of a complete striker. He can do anything for you.

“When he gets on the ball, he knows how to hold it up and then has this change of direction and control of the ball to take it away.

“He attacks deep into the penalty area and he’s good at throwing his weight around. He’s quick for such a big player.

“He’s good with his head and either foot. He’s a fantastic player.”
