Roma Coach Luciano Spalletti mocked the Kevin Strootman ban and Senad Lulic comments, joking “they might suspend Antonio Rudiger for simulated sock-selling.”

Controversy erupted after the 2-0 derby victory over Lazio on Sunday, as Strootman received a two-match ban for simulation when Danilo Cataldi grabbed the back of his shirt to spark a touchline brawl.

Roma have lodged an emergency appeal, noting that if Cataldi received a one-game suspension for violent conduct, it means Strootman could not have simulated as well.

Roma have lodged an emergency appeal, noting that if Cataldi received a one-game suspension for violent conduct, it means Strootman could not have simulated as well.

There was also chaos after Lazio defender Lulic made racist comments suggesting Rudiger “sold socks and belts in Stuttgart up until two years ago,” painting him as the stereotype of a street seller.

“We can expect pretty much anything now,” smiled Spalletti in today’s Press conference when asked about the ban.

“If this is the way the Disciplinary Commission wants to read a situation, then truly anything could happen.

“In fact, I hope Lulic does not get a ban, otherwise they could even suspend Rudiger for simulated sock-selling in Stuttgart.

“If the Cataldi incident on Strootman had occurred inside the penalty area, would it have been a penalty or simulation? At what point do you rule something is simulation when there is contact? I think you get into such vast differences in interpretation that it becomes difficult to find a way out.”
