Italy have a mixed record against Spain as they go into the UEFA EURO 2020 semi-final, but two out of three Roja victories in tournaments came on penalties.

It kicks off on Tuesday at Wembley Stadium at 20.00 UK time.

Including friendlies, this will be the 38th meeting between the nations, with 13 Spain victories, 11 for Italy and 13 draws.

The balance is evident in the goals, as each side scored and conceded 51.

Their most recent encounters were the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, drawing 1-1 in Italy and losing 3-0 in the second leg.

However, when it comes to tournament clashes, the picture looks a little more reassuring for the Azzurri.

In these situations, Italy won three, drew three and lost three – but only one Spain victory came in regular time.

That was the 4-0 EURO 2012 Final, otherwise Spain won on penalties in the 2013 Confederations Cup semi-final and EURO 2008 quarter-final.

Italy won 2-0 in the EURO 2016 Round of 16 thanks to goals from Giorgio Chiellini and Graziano Pellè.

Perhaps the best-remembered meeting was the 1994 World Cup quarter-final, as Dino Baggio and a late Roberto Baggio goal secured the 2-1 Azzurri victory.

Current Spain coach Luis Enrique remembers it well too, as he had his nose broken by Mauro Tassotti’s elbow in the days before VAR.

Of course, they are scheduled to meet again on October 6 for the Nations League semi-final.
