Paulo Sousa “never expected Fiorentina to be so far from our football principles” after a 1-1 draw with Verona.

The bottom of the table club grabbed a late equaliser at the Stadio Franchi and threatened to pick up all three points.

“I do not feel anger. Sadness yes, because everything we are capable of doing, we didn’t do today, so consequently we dropped points,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“When you have certain figures on the field it can make a difference to the approach, but even then I never expected us to be so far from our football principles.”

The Viola have now been caught in fourth place by Inter and are five points adrift of Roma in third.

“Everyone can walk tall when things are going well, it’s harder when there are obstacles. As a Coach I must focus on the attitude and individual performance of the players, then as a consequence the performance of the team will improve.”

Sousa made massive changes to his line-up, so was it to motivate other players or because some had struggled in training?

“Gonzalo Rodriguez had a slight calf problem this week and we wanted to rest him. I try to motivate the squad, of course, and to help them be competitive within the group, because that makes them train to the max in every session.

“We should always think of victory and make choices aimed at that objective. A Coach has to think of the result, but also of preparing players to give the best possible response for the game and their careers.”
