“We’ve been working since the first day of preseason to win,” Skriniar told Sport Mediaset after Slovakia’s 1-1 draw with Wales on Thursday.

“We want to win. We must keep going like this. Conte’s changed our mentality because he has a winning one. We must never give up and try to the end.

“Of course, the defeat to Juve is a stimulus for us. We lost our first League game, but we played well. They scored, we didn’t. We just have to work hard.

“I’d like to lift a trophy as captain, but now I’m working to do well for my team. Becoming the best defender in the world isn’t in my thoughts.

“I have to improve. I’m happy if others think it's possible, but I’m only thinking about the good of my team.”

The centre-back has faced Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Lionel Messi in the last nine days, so who impressed him the most?

“Messi,” he replied.

“With Messi, you can tell right away that he sees the whole game and senses all the space around him.

“The other two are also great players. I was lucky enough to face all three of them in just a few days and it was nice. It’s why we play football.”
