Stefano Sensi cancelled out the Simone Verdi opener, but Monza will rue only picking up a point against Verona after a goal was disallowed by millimetres and they wasted good chances.
Hellas were still stuck in the bottom three after the goalless draw with Spezia and went into this game without Kevin Lasagna, Isak Hien, Miguel Veloso, Ajdin Hrustic, Milan Djuric, Ibrahim Sulemana, Federico Ceccherini, Thomas Henry and January signing Cyril Ngonge. Monza weren’t faring much better, missing Dany Mota Carvalho, Nicolò Rovella and Marlon, but Filippo Ranocchia was back in the squad.
Matteo Pessina blasted over and Patrick Ciurria fired straight at Lorenzo Montipò from distance, while Michele Di Gregorio got a glove to the Yayah Kallon cross-shot and Andrea Petagna nodded a corner off target.
It was Verona who took the lead somewhat against the run of play, as Ondrej Duda’s strike was charged down, ricocheted into the path of Simone Verdi to blast into the roof of the net from 12 yards.
Adolfo Gaich should’ve made it 2-0 only to scuff the finish into the arms of Di Gregorio and that proved costly, as Monza equalised moments later.
It was a good passing move right to left, as Carlos August pulled back from the by-line for Stefano Sensi to tap in from six yards.
Gianluca Caprari had the ball in the net to put Monza 2-1 up on the hour mark, but it was disallowed as Petagna was offside by millimetres in the build-up. Caprari had refused to celebrate against his former club.
A desperate Diego Coppola block prevented Petagna from scoring on the Carlos August knock-down, but Pessina really should’ve won it for Monza in the final minute when he dribbled past a defender only to fire over the bar.
Andrea Colpani saw his strike deflected wide with the last kick of the game.
Verona 1-1 Monza
