Isaac Success missed a penalty and Walace scored with the aid of a deflection, but Ederson snatched a point for Atalanta in stoppages.
The Friulani got their first win of the season with a shock 1-0 result away to Milan last week, but new coach Gabriele Cioffi still had a massive absentee list including suspended Christian Kabasele, injured Gerard Deulofeu, Keinan Davis, Vivaldo Semedo, Thomas Kristensen, Kingsley Ehizibue and Enzo Ebosse. La Dea qualified for the Europa League knockouts midweek, but lost to Inter in Serie A. Rafael Toloi was suspended, with Charles De Ketelaere, Giorgio Scalvini, Jose Luis Palomino and El Bilal Toure on the treatment table, so Marten de Roon was a makeshift defender.
Festy Ebosele went on a strong run from his own half and went down in the box under pressure from Berat Djimsiti, but not enough to warrant a penalty.
The hosts did get their spot-kick soon after, as Mario Pasalic was robbed in midfield to spark the counter-attack and Marco Carnesecchi brought down Joao Ferreira. However, Isaac Success stepped up and far too casually side-footed it onto the base of the upright.
Udinese thought luck was really not on their side when the stunning Lazar Samardzic curler bounced off the crossbar, but the move continued and Walace saw his long-range strike take a huge deflection off Djimsiti to wrong-foot Carnesecchi.
Atalanta were toothless, so Gianluca Scamacca and Ademola Lookman came on, but Udinese threatened again when Jordan Zemura surprised Hans Hateboer on a cross-field pass and saw his angled drive kept out by Carnesecchi’s legs.
Carnesecchi made an even more extraordinary save, fingertipping the Roberto Pereyra left-foot curler round the post.
Lookman couldn’t steer the volley on target from the back post, while Scamacca turned Jaka Bijol only to fire off target.
Atalanta finally got their equaliser in stoppages, as a corner was not cleared, so Davide Zappacosta floated a ball over the top and Ederson was allowed a free header from 12 yards because Thiesson Kristensen slipped.
They were pushing for all three points, Lookman drilling wide of the near post.
