Roma came back twice from quality Antonio Candreva and Boulaye Dia goals, as Stephan El Shaarawy and Nemanja Matic snatched a point to stay in the European race.

During this match, news came through that Juventus had been docked 10 points, so they are bumped up to sixth place.

The Giallorossi booked their place in the Europa League Final with Thursday’s hard-fought stalemate away to Bayer Leverkusen and the injury crisis was starting to ease, as only Paulo Dybala, Rick Karsdorp and Marash Kumbulla were still out of action. Salernitana had already guaranteed Serie A safety and missed Federico Fazio against his old club.

It was the visitors who opened the scoring with a simply magnificent goal, as Lassana Coulibaly floated a ball over the top, Antonio Candreva watched it dip over his shoulder and thumped a perfect volley off the outside of the right boot into the far top corner.

Stephan El Shaarawy fired wide from the edge of the area, while Bohinen and Nicola Zalewski both blasted over.

Roma thought they had equalised in first half stoppages when Roger Ibanez knocked down a corner, it ricocheted off Andrea Belotti and the defender then fired in from six yards. However, it struck Belotti on the arm and the goal was disallowed following an on-field review.

The Giallorossi also appealed for a penalty when Ola Solbakken’s shot was charged down, but it struck Lorenzo Pirola on the chest.

Jose Mourinho made a triple change at the break and it paid off immediately, as Lorenzo Pellegrini’s free kick was only parried into the path of Stephan El Shaarawy to score from a tricky angle.

However, Salernitana scored with another classy finish, as Krzysztof Piatek saw his shot deflected off Smalling, allowing Boulaye Dia to improvise with a cheeky back-heel flick from six yards.

Gini Wijnaldum had penalty appeals waved away, as he went down too easily under pressure from Flavius Daniliuc, while Belotti didn’t get his head to the Pellegrini cross in time from six yards.

Mady Camara ballooned over, although a foul had also been given against Belotti on Guillermo Ochoa, and Tammy Abraham’s glancing header was a simple save.

However, Roma got back on level terms again, as a corner was only cleared as far as Nemanja Matic to drill in through a sea of legs from 12 yards.

The hosts wanted the win and Zalewski blasted over, while Abraham got in the way of a powerful El Shaarawy volley and Bryan Cristante’s header was straight at Ochoa.

A brawl broke out on the touchline deep into stoppages when Zalewski brought down Dia to stop a counter-attack, resulting in yellow cards for both and a red for a member of the Salernitana staff.
