The final relegation spot is going down to the wire, as Verona and Spezia are locked together on 31 points, so could be heading for a play-off.

Hellas were for some time today in pole position to secure safety, as they were leading Empoli 1-0 at the Stadio Bentegodi.

However, conceding the equaliser at the 96th minute transformed everything and left them on level terms with Spezia on 31 points.

Lecce are on 33 and could secure their safety this afternoon with a win away to Monza.

It all goes down to the final round of the season and the fixture list is not kind, because Verona visit Milan at San Siro, Spezia are up against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico and Lecce host Bologna.

Under the new rules this season, rather than using head-to-head record, if two teams are level on points for relegation, then it will be decided on a play-off match.

In theory, Lecce could draw with Monza today, meaning that at the end of the season Lecce, Spezia and Verona could all be on 34 points.

If that happened, a mini-table would be drawn up of their head-to-head records with each other, the top team is safe and the other two go into a play-off.

In that case, Verona would be safe on seven points, followed by Spezia on six and Lecce two.
