Victor Osimhen made his comeback and smashed a strike against the crossbar, but Napoli failed to break down the Hellas Verona wall.
The Partenopei rotated some players ahead of the Champions League quarter-final decider with Milan, having lost the first leg 1-0, with Giovanni Simeone still out of action, Tanguy Ndombele suspended and Victor Osimhen only fit for the bench. Kim Min-jae and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa could start, as they are banned for the second leg on Tuesday. Hellas had Miguel Veloso and Giangiacomo Magnani suspended, plus Ajdin Hrustic, Ibrahim Sulemana, Deyovaisio Zeefuik and Thomas Henry injured.
Napoli had the ball in the net after 20 minutes on a corner after Adolfo Gaich deflected Matteo Politano’s effort, but it was ruled offside because Mathias Olivera was offside and had to get out of the way of the ball, so was clearly interfering with play.
Kevin Lasagna stung Alex Meret’s gloves with a ferocious strike on the counter-attack, as the hosts continued to move the ball around trying to find a way past the Hellas wall, Giacomo Raspadori and Chucky Lozano just failing to get on the end of through passes.
Federico Ceccherini risked a second yellow card for a challenge on Lozano straight after the restart, while Di Lorenzo nodded Anguissa’s cross wide of the target.
Isak Hien made a decisive interception after Di Lorenzo cut inside from the right, but with still no shots on target, Osimhen made his comeback after injury on international duty.
Piotr Zielinski’s strike was charged down by Adrien Tameze, while Osimhen had appeals for a Hien tackle, but it was outside the box and he seemed to lose his balance during the turn too.
Simone Verdi’s free kick was smothered by Meret, but Osimhen could not have come closer with an absolutely ferocious half-volley from the edge of the box that smashed against the crossbar on 82 minutes.
Verona even had the chance to win it in stoppages, but Cyriel Ngonge made a complete hash of the counter-attack one-on-one.
