Roma fumbled an early lead and conceded two late goals from Luka Jovic and Jonathan Ikone to rule them out of the race for a top four finish, giving Fiorentina a morale-boosting victory.
The Viola were beaten 2-1 by Inter on Wednesday in the Coppa Italia Final and are now gearing up for the Conference League Final against West Ham United on June 7, while the Giallorossi will play Sevilla in the Europa League decider on May 31. Paulo Dybala, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Nemanja Matic, Leonardo Spinazzola and Rui Patricio were left behind, with the season already over for Marash Kumbulla and Rick Karsdorp.
After a long period of Viola possession, it was Roma who struck first on the counter from a corner, as Andrea Belotti’s cross to the back post was nodded back by Ola Solbakken for the Stephan El Shaarawy volley from six yards.
Jonathan Ikone and Alfred Duncan both went for the same Cristiano Biraghi cross, but it was nearly 2-0 as Gini Wijnaldum was sent clear by El Shaarawy and Michele Cerofolini fingertipped the ball off his feet, Lucas Martinez Quarta needing a goal-line clearance to prevent the Solbakken angle drive.
Cristiano Biraghi’s free kick tested Mile Svilar and Wijnaldum’s effort was deflected for a corner after again springing the offside trap.
El Shaarawy almost added a second with his ferocious long-range screamer that Cerofolini fingertipped out of the far top corner, while the goalkeeper also had his gloves stung by an Andrea Belotti angled drive.
Diego Llorente was all over Luka Jovic to stop him turning in a corner from six yards, while Nikola Milenkovic had penalty appeals waved away for a coming together with Gianluca Mancini. There were far stronger appeals for a Missori foul on Aleksa Terzic, but the referee had already stopped play for the earlier Riccardo Sottil foul on Missori.
Moments later, Fiorentina equalised when Kouame’s cross from the right was knocked down by a towering Rolando Mandragora header, finding Jovic to tap in from a couple of yards.
The Viola were fired up and turned the game around completely within a three-minute spell. This time Terzic’s cross from the right was floated for Kouame’s header down and Ikone finished it from point-blank range.
Fiorentina 2-1 Roma
El Shaarawy 12 (R), Jovic 85 (F), Ikone 88 (F)
