An extraordinary Wojciech Szczesny save and the frame of the goal denied Atalanta, who dominated for long periods, but were unable to break Juventus down.
This was a head-to-head for third place, as Charles De Ketelaere recovered from a muscular issue to start, with Gianluca Scamacca and El Bilal Toure still out of action. Dusan Vlahovic, Arek Milik, Alex Sandro and Mattia De Sciglio didn’t make the trip, with Paul Pogba suspended for failing a doping test, but Moise Kean returned to partner Federico Chiesa.
Davide Zappacosta had a double opportunity on Matteo Ruggeri’s cross, the first charged down and then the rebound scuffed wide of the back post.
Giorgio Scalvini cut across to block the Chiesa shot and Juan Musso got down to beat away a Nicoló Fagioli curler after a corner.
Musso also smothered the Moise Kean attempt from distance, while Ederson’s cross flashed just past both the head of De Ketelaere and the far post.
Chiesa pounced on a loose ball after a double ricochet off Atalanta defenders, his strike from distance acrobatically palmed away by Musso with one glove.
Juve were pinned back entirely in their own half for long periods, but De Ketelaere couldn’t keep the finish down from a tricky angle and Manuel Locatelli cleared a Sead Kolasinac glancing header practically off the line before Ederson’s overhead kick was over the bar.
There was a huge opportunity on 74 minutes when Luis Muriel’s free kick was fingertipped onto the crossbar by Szczesny, it bounced back off the goalkeeper and out again.
Berat Djimsiti’s header was over from a corner, then Szczesny saw a Muriel strike bounce off his chest and Koopmeiners was unable to keep the rebound down.
In stoppages, Koopmeiners wasted another chance by blasting over from 12 yards on a Mitchel Bakker pull-back.
