The Biancazzurri, having already staved off one spot-kick, fell behind after half an hour following Francesco Vicari’s harsh red card and Gianluca Lapadula’s subsequent penalty.

However, they responded admirably and secured another important point in their battle against relegation through Manuel Lazzari’s equaliser.

“It’s a draw that should give us strength and self-belief to achieve our target,” Semplici said in his post-match interview.

“We went down to 10 men after 28 minutes and came back with that character, not compromising our qualities.

“I congratulate the group. It wasn’t easy after the two penalties conceded. We are happy but the journey is long and we haven’t achieved anything significant.

“The team started well. Today the boys were very good, they played with character and that should give us conviction.

“We keep our feet on the ground but we can be happy playing like that.”

Semplici was visibly frustrated with the awarding of the second Genoa penalty but refused to comment further when asked for his thoughts.

“Let’s say that I didn’t see the second penalty. We move forward.”
