“We definitely did very well in the first 20 minutes,” a satisfied Pioli reacted post-match. “Later, Crotone played more in our half of the pitch.

“In the second half we started well straight away, with their red card we had even more of an advantage.”

Fiorentina have won all three of their matches since the death of captain Davide Astori, with Pioli believing his side have formed a strong collective unit in the aftermath of the tragedy.

“We continue to do our best. We are built to do that, what happened has given us strength.

“There are teams who are ahead of us, but we will try to do everything possible.

“We think about doing our best, game after game.

“We are going through a good period of form, but now we have to think about the match in Udine.

“Today was a difficult match, without a lot of players available. The team worked well against difficult opposition.”

The Viola return to Udine in midweek to play the match that was postponed immediately after Astori’s sudden passing.

And Pioli admits it will be a difficult experience for his team.

“Preparing for the match in Florence won’t be difficult, but we can’t pretend it’s nothing when we arrive in Udine.

“We need to be strong, my boys are strong and the memory of Davide will always stay with us.

“There will be emotions and I hope we will be able to be stronger than ever.”
