Semi-automatic offside technology was used in the Supercoppa Italiana and almost immediately proved decisive on Federico Dimarco’s opening goal for Inter against Milan.

The SAOT system will be introduced in Serie A from the second half of the season and was provided in the Supercoppa between Milan and Inter in Riyadh this evening.

Within 10 minutes it had already been put to good use, showing that Nicolò Barella was being kept onside by Simon Kjaer in the build-up to Dimarco’s opening goal.

The technology hopes to speed up the process of checking for offside in the VAR booth, computers and cameras all over the pitch keeping track of dozens of points of the body of each individual player.
