Antonio Conte opened up about his decision to continue his post-operation recovery in Italy, underlining how ‘it’s necessary’ following the surgery.

The 53-year-old Italian coach underwent a gallbladder operation earlier this month following a bout of serious pain and was forced to miss out on Spurs’ 1-0 win over Manchester City. He returned to the dugout, against doctors’ orders, for the Champions League defeat to Milan.

Earlier today, Tottenham announced that Conte would be staying in Italy to continue his recovery, leaving assistant coach Cristian Stellini to take over in his place.

Writing on his Instagram story, Conte sent a message to the fans and explained why he’s staying in Italy to recover.

“My great sense of responsibility towards the club, the players, the staff and the fans pushed me to speed up my return. Unfortunately, I underestimated the surgery, which was not routine, but a serious and unexpected emergency.

“My body suffered and now I am forced to stop again until my full recovery.

“Those who know me know how much this hurts, but now it is necessary. Come on you Spurs!”
