Sassuolo had to work hard to secure all three points after a long and difficult clash against a Spezia side fighting to avoid the relegation spots.
The Neroverdi have recovered after their anxiety-inducing start to the season, having once been left languishing in 17th in the table. The 5-2 win over Milan at the end of January fired Sassuolo up and gave them some much needed confidence heading into the final stages of the season, allowing them to climb up the Serie A table.
It’s a different story for Spezia, who came into this match just five points ahead of relegation candidates Hellas Verona. The Ligurian outfit need every point possible now as they look to avoid the drop to Serie B, but were left frustrated after a long 90-minute clash in Reggio Emilia.
Sassuolo and Spezia both looked hungry for the win as they battled it out in the Mapei Stadium, with both sides looking positive in possession and picking up a number of chances in both halves of the match.
The Neroverdi eventually found a breakthrough in the 71st minute, when talisman Domenico Berardi scored from the penalty spot following a handball by Aquilotti full back Kelvin Amian.
Spezia struggled to keep up with the home side after going behind, trying to remain positive on the ball but failing to match Sassuolo’s intensity. Their efforts were ultimately in vain and Alessio Dionisi’s side picked up another three points after seeing out their victory.
