Empoli’s Riccardo Saponara says he ‘needs to choose the right project’ and ‘would prefer to stay in Italy’.

The attacking midfielder is highly sought after on the peninsula and appears set to leave the Tuscan club this summer.

The 24-year-old was formerly with Milan but struggled to get opportunities at San Siro and has flourished since, contributing five goals and eight assists this season in 25 Serie A games.

“I already went to a big club once and I didn’t get many chances, so I need to choose the right project for me,” he said to Sport Mediaset.

“I’d prefer to stay in Italy, but if the right offer arrived from abroad I would take it into consideration.”
