Walter Samuel is confident the Europa League can revitalise Inter. “Winning is in our DNA, so let’s win this and the European Super Cup.”

The Nerazzurri scraped to a disappointing sixth place in Serie A this season, meaning they must start the Europa League from the preliminary rounds on August 2 and 9.

“Next season we want to go back to winning. The Europa League is one of our objectives, especially as if we win this then we can play the European Super Cup. That’s the only trophy we failed to lift in the year of the Treble,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We will prove that we’re not finished. Winning is in our DNA and the difficulties of the last few months were just stepping stones on the journey.

“My teammates and I are still hungry for success and proved that in the final weeks of the campaign. Winning the Europa League to then fight for the European Super Cup in Montecarlo is in our plans. We can write history again.”

The campaign was fraught with problems, as the team went through four Coaches in the past 12 months.

“I am absolutely certain there are not 30 points truly separating Inter from Milan and Juventus. Our worth will emerge next season.

“The constant changes were proof that something didn’t work. I had a good rapport with all the tacticians, including Gian Piero Gasperini and Claudio Ranieri. Everything is ok with Andrea Stramaccioni too, as he is young, but we were convinced by his ideas.”

Inter will get even more of an Argentine flavour next term, as Rodrigo Palacio has agreed his transfer from Genoa.

“Rodrigo is a fantastic striker and someone who can make the difference, so I am very happy at his arrival,” added the 34-year-old.
