Despite a difficult start to the season, Sampdoria director Carlo Osti insists the club will not fire Marco Giampaolo during the break for international duty. ‘He will certainly be there against Monza.’

The Blucerchiati are without a single victory yet this season, managing only two points from seven Serie A rounds, having held Juventus and Lazio to draws at Marassi.

They were beaten 2-1 today by Liguria rivals Spezia after taking the lead through Abdelhamid Sabiri’s strike.

This prompted reports that the club was considering the recall of Roberto D’Aversa, who was sacked to make way for Giampaolo in January 2022.

“I am here to tell you that when Sampdoria resume the season against Monza, Giampaolo will certainly still be the coach,” Osti told Sky Sport Italia.

“Perhaps he won’t actually be on the bench, because we’re still appealing the two-match ban, but he will be in charge.”

However, Osti won’t deny that Sampdoria are struggling badly with just four goals scored and 13 conceded.

“The statistics don’t look good, but we also have to evaluate today’s performance. The team created a lot of chances against a good side like Spezia.

“What we cannot do is concede an equaliser a few seconds after taking the lead, these are all things we will evaluate with the coach, the team and the club.”
