Olympique Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli confirms he nearly joined Lazio in 2016, but tomorrow he’ll try to beat them in the Europa League.

The Group E game kicks off at the Stade de Marseille on Thursday at 20.00 GMT following their 0-0 draw at the Stadio Olimpico.

“I did meet with Lazio President Claudio Lotito in 2016 to discuss the possibility of coaching the team,” Sampaoli confirmed in his press conference.

“It didn’t happen in the end, but it would’ve been a good opportunity for me, considering the quality of the players in this squad.”

Galatasaray are top of the group with seven points, followed by Lazio on four and Marseille three, as the French side drew all three games.

“There are still plenty of points up for grabs and so far we haven’t picked up as many as we would’ve deserved.

“This is going to be a difficult match, considering the characteristics of the players and their coach, Maurizio Sarri. It will be tough, but we have to win.

“We cannot go into this too anxious or afraid, because Lazio can hurt us if we lose the ball. It will be a very strategic and tactical match.”

Lazio fans are barred from travelling due to security concerns, just as Marseille supporters were forbidden for the first leg in Rome.

Marseille also face other punishment for fan behaviour, so the club has invited children to pack the section that is locked down.

“I think it’s a marvellous initiative. This helps to create a sense of belonging to the club. I hope the kids can have an exciting evening and the same for us, as we want to prove our values beyond the result.”
