The Swiss international full-back had been linked with Milan before entering advanced negotiations with Lazio.

“I note there is a lot of media coverage about Ziegler, but for us this player is too important and we have decided not to lose him,” President Garrone told lalaziosiamonoi.it.

“At this moment the priority is to keep a competitive squad and therefore we cannot do without him. The decision has been made. Ziegler is staying at Sampdoria.”

Nonetheless, the Blucerchiati patron did leave the door open to potentially changing his mind.

“We will only take an offer for Ziegler into consideration if it is financially favourable to us. For the moment adequate bids have not been received.”

His contract expires in June, so he could leave on a free transfer, but Sampdoria will only release him early for €4m cash.

“We haven't spoken to Lazio for a few days. This is an important player and we will not accept others being introduced as part of an exchange.”

The Biancocelesti had reportedly offered Pasquale Foggia as part of the deal.
