Arrigo Sacchi has heaped praise on Stefano Pioli and Milan after their promising display during their 2-0 home win over Lazio on Saturday evening, explaining that, at times, it felt like watching the Milan of years gone by.

The Rossoneri moved back up to second place in the Serie A table and are now level on points with the league leaders, Inter, recovering well since the recent 5-1 loss to their city rivals.

With goals from summer acquisitions Christian Pulisic and Noah Okafor on the 60th and 88th minute respectively, Milan blew Maurizio Sarri’s side in the second half.

There had to be adjustments from Pioli as well, with key midfielders in Rade Krunic and Ismael Bennacer still on the sidelines. Ruben Loftus-Cheek was also taken off a little over 20 minutes into the first half as well.

Still, they persevered and put in a display that has impressed the fans and pundits alike.

Writing in his weekly column for La Gazzetta dello Sport on Sunday morning, Sacchi noted that: “Milan against Lazio, especially in the second half, was at the limits of perfection.

He continued “They were an organised, aggressive team, where everyone helped each other. The ball played on the ground, no useless long throws, with all units connecting well with each other. And in these conditions, even a luxury talent like Leao threw himself in and gave his best.”

Milan return to action on Tuesday evening with a visit to Germany to face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, where they will look to build on their opening 0-0 draw with Newcastle a fortnight ago.
