Former Inter and Roma director Walter Sabatini was ‘scandalised’ by Romelu Lukaku’s behaviour, both for the initial move to Chelsea and the return to Italy.

The striker had the best seasons of his career with the Nerazzurri under Antonio Conte, only to demand a €113m move to Stamford Bridge.

When that failed, he returned to Inter on loan and they were in negotiations to make the move permanent when it emerged he was in talks with their arch-rivals Juventus instead.

In the final hours of the transfer window, the Belgian joined Roma on loan without an option to buy.

“All that happened with Lukaku was just unpleasant,” Sabatini told TV Play.

“Directors need to follow ethical principles and players ought to as well. This was a club that showed faith in him, made him happy with Antonio Conte, then protected him when he was playing really badly last season.

“Inter always had a faultless attitude with him. His attempt to run away scandalised me, it’s quite simply a matter of ethics.”
