Former Roma director Walter Sabatini is so convinced of Gerson’s quality that “if he doesn’t get his chance here, I’ll take him to my next club.”

The 19-year-old Brazilian was signed by Sabatini from Fluminense for €16.6m over the summer, but managed only a handful of appearances for the club, most of them in the Europa League.

“He is doing what he needs to do, as he is a 19-year-old kid who is learning another style of football,” Sabatini told Roma TV.

“Gerson will have his chances. If he doesn’t get them at Roma, then I’ll take him to my next club, whoever that is when I start working again…”

Sabatini was also criticised for bringing in Emerson Palmieri, but the ex-Palermo wing-back is becoming a regular.

“I always thought he was a good player and Luciano Spalletti is really making the most of him. He cost so little that he balances out the prices of those that some consider a failed move on my part…”
