Alessio Romagnoli has pulled out of Italy’s Under-21 squad due to the effects of a foot injury he sustained with Sampdoria.

The defender, on loan from Roma, underwent tests this morning to assess his availability for this week’s friendly with Denmark.

Those examinations were taken on a fractured metatarsal sustained whilst in action for Samp a few weeks ago, and Azzurrini medical staff have determined from the results to send the 19-year-old home.

Romagnoli’s absence means the Azzurrini will face Denmark on November 17 without either of their first-choice centre-backs, as Daniele Rugani has been promoted to the senior squad.

“We hope we can count on a full stadium in Matera. The fans are always important, as they give you the extra boost in times of trouble,” midfielder Cristian Battocchio told Vivo Azzurro, Italy’s official YouTube channel today.

On the topic of Italy’s draw for next year’s European Under-21 Championship, the Watford loanee added: “They are all strong teams, but we need not fear anyone. We have shown ourselves to hurt any opponents.”
