Barcelona meanwhile lined-up with deadly attacking trio Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez. Javier Mascherano, who has been linked with a move to a number of Italian clubs of late, also started.

The game began with few opportunities, but it was the hosts who seriously threatened first. Ivan Rakitic’s effort drew a fine save out of new goalkeeper Szczesny, before the Croatian midfielder came even closer when his effort was blocked on the line by Yanga-Mbiwa and Rafinha failed to score with the rebound.

Barca did, however, take the lead not long after when Messi’s cross was flicked on my Jeremie Mathieu and finished off by Neymar.

Just under five minutes before the interval, it was two after Messi turned goalscorer by finishing off a long team move started by Suarez.

Garcia changed his entire starting 11 over the course of the second half, with Rakitic the only player from either side to last the entire 90 minutes.

It was the former Sevilla man who made the game safe for the hosts midway through the second period, rifling an unstoppable effort past the helpless Szczesny.
