Roma appear to have won the race to sign highly-rated Brazilian midfielder Gerson from Fluminense.

This evening, the South American club’s President Peter Siemsen gave an interview confirming that the Giallorossi had beaten off competition from Barcelona to sign the 18-year-old in January.

“Gerson will go to Roma in January,” he told reporters. “Until the end of December he will stay with us. He will not go to Barcelona.”

The announcement is contrary to earlier reports that the player had rejected the Stadio Olimpico side in favour of a move to Camp Nou. 

The deal, which is yet to be officially confirmed, is reported to be costing the Serie A runners-up a total of €17m.
