Morgan De Sanctis has reflected on Roma’s ambition ‘to change Italian football’, as he remarks on Rudi Garcia’s intelligence and his Italy retirement.

Called in by Roma TV, as part of the unorthodox format of the Slideshow program, the goalkeeper was shown a sequence of photos and asked to provide a comment in response to them.

When shown a photo of the Curva Sud on the day of the team's presentation last year, De Sanctis began: “The atmosphere and the emotions on that day were controversial.

“We were worried that the supporters might have manifested their unhappiness after the ending of the previous season.

“Instead, just as we were hoping, the tifosi gave a sign of their faith and their high esteem for the shirt and their champions.”

Next came a photo with James Pallotta: “When I met the President, the things that were being said may not have done him justice.

“I hope to be a protagonist with this team as a player but I hope to stay with them after that, too, because this is a society and a group of people that really wants to change Italian football, and I'm convinced they will succeed.”

De Sanctis expressed admiration before a photo with Rudi Garcia.

“We must recognise that he has an intelligence above the average,” said the ‘keeper.

“And this allowed him to create empathy with the team, with management, the supporters and even the Press.

“He played a crucial part with us last season and he will continue to do that for as long as he is with Roma.

“He also has a great ambition to improve and do his work at his best. This will push him to his limit and it will let Roma reach important targets.”

Finally, when confronted with a photo of Antonio Conte and Carlo Tavecchio, his tone sobered up a little.

“This argument is delicate. For my own part, as far as the national team goes, I made a considered decision.

“It was time to let go and focus my strength solely on playing for a club. A new cycle is beginning, both executive – and I have expressed some hesitation here – and technical, which was the first priority.

“It was the best choice because he was the best Coach that could take the Italian reins. Now that he is no longer our antagonist, I wish for him to gather the kind of success that Italy needs.”
