Stephan El Shaarawy says the Europa League is “Roma’s big objective” after missing out on the Champions League.

The Giallorossi finished third in Serie A last season, meaning they had to go through a play-off to reach the Group Stage, and they were defeated 4-1 on aggregate by Porto.

“How do we start again? Right away against Sampdoria,” El Shaarawy told Roma TV after meeting the Pope.

“It’s a very difficult match but we have to start from there. The transfer window is shut, we have our squad and we have to try to focus on every match we play.

“We didn’t get into the Champions League, but the Europa League remains our big objective other than the League. So let’s immediately start playing good football and getting good results.

“We’ve signed some great international players who have done pretty well so far, even though we didn’t qualify for the Champions League.

“We’ll have time to prepare things better, train together and figure out what went wrong in those games.

“We have the potential to do well this season, because the team is strong and has important potential.”
