The original idea had been to maintain the 4-2-3-1 formation with Alessandro Florenzi in a more advanced role as part of the supporting trident with Nicolò Zaniolo and Stephan El Shaarawy.

However, Sky Sport Italia are now suggesting Roma will copy Milan’s 4-3-3 system, thereby giving more protection in midfield to De Rossi, who has not started for three months due to a knee issue.

This would mean pulling Lorenzo Pellegrini and Zaniolo back into deeper midfield roles, introducing Schick on the right wing of the trident with El Shaarawy on the left.

There are precious few doubts as to Gennaro Gattuso’s starting XI, as Milan are fresh from a 2-0 Coppa Italia victory over Napoli.

Krzysztof Piatek started that match and will be in the trident attack again this evening, flanked by Suso and Hakan Calhanoglu.

Probable line-ups

Roma: Olsen; Florenzi, Manolas, Fazio, Kolarov; Zaniolo, De Rossi, Lorenzo Pellegrini; Schick, Dzeko, El Shaarawy

Milan: G Donnarumma; Calabria, Musacchio, Romagnoli, Rodriguez; Kessie, Bakayoko, Paquetá; Suso, Piatek, Calhanoglu
