Until now Luciano Spalletti had been considered the front-runner if Garcia was dismissed, but SportItalia reported late last night that negotiations were intensifying with Mazzarri.
He is still under contract with Inter, but the club is more than happy to terminate by mutual consent if it means saving on his €3.3m wages.
Roma hierarchy hope to hold on until the end of the season, when they can find a bigger name to replace Garcia, such as current Italy manager Antonio Conte.
