After two consecutive defeats, Jose Mourinho’s Roma finally returned to winning ways with an edgy 2-1 victory over Empoli.

The Giallorossi came into the match desperate for a positive result after suffering back to back losses to Udinese and Ludogorets, and they finally had something to smile about at the Stadio Carlo Castellani this evening.

Paulo Dybala put Roma ahead after just 17 minutes with a trademark curler from just outside the box, but the Giallorossi soon found themselves on the back foot as Paolo Zanetti’s side searched for an equaliser. They were rewarded for their efforts just before the half time break as Filippo Bandinelli guided a header past Rui Patricio to make things level.

Mourinho clearly highlighted his frustration at half time because the Giallorossi had a new lease of life starting the second half. After numerous attempts the away side again took the lead – Dybala’s floated cross was met by a darting Tammy Abraham, who made no mistake from less than six yards out, putting Roma 2-1 up.

Lorenzo Pellegrini had the opportunity to close out the game in the 80th minute with a penalty, but his attempt ricocheted off the crossbar, leaving the Giallorossi captain to roll his eyes.

Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro was shown a straight red card with less than five minutes left after a dangerous challenge on Chris Smalling, further frustrating the home support.

Whilst it may not have been the more attractive victory, Mourinho won’t be too concerned as his team return to the Italian capital with all three points in the bag.
