Roma will pay €2m for the six-month loan and the option to buy for €13m will become mandatory after five appearances.
This gives Milan more guarantees than the last time they sent El Shaarawy out, as Monaco played him for 24 games – one shy of the mandatory cutting off point – and sent him back to San Siro.
