Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was mocked for mentioning Roma as an example of a club that ‘spent a lot and isn’t in the Champions League,’ but it seems as if he wasn’t criticising Jose Mourinho.

The statement in a press conference caused quite a lot of controversy both in Italy and England, with Guardiola seeming to suggest Roma’s expenditure on the transfer market was in any way comparable to that of City.

Guardiola compares Manchester City spending to Mourinho’s Roma

However, Roma have analysed the footage carefully from that interview and are now confident Guardiola was misunderstood.

He had said “that’s normal” rather than “AS Roma” and was therefore not referring to the Giallorossi, who are in the Europa Conference League Final against Feyenoord.

9 thought on “Roma confident Guardiola wasn’t criticising Mourinho’s club”
  1. Spending only 100 M $ on one player and he is not playing . Oil behind teams killing the soccer .

  2. Say what you want but Pep had a dog at Mourinho and Mourinho will take exception to it, rightly so!! What an idiotic comment by Pep and the last guy you want to start a war of words with, the Special 1

  3. He literally did say that’s normal. Analize his accent throughout his speech and you still see what i mean. Just another case of people makikg something out of nothing so idiots like us read and comment

  4. People think the CL is a walk in the park.
    Nobody could guarantee the CL title !
    Man City don’t have the European heritage of Real Madrid, Milan, Barca, Bayern, Liverpool, etc. Guardiola is trying to give them something to build on.
    This is why for him, a CL final and 1 semi-final in the last two seasons is not a failure.
    He will eventually win it I think, maybe next season with Haaland.

    @José
    And what did he say afterwards?
    How does “that’s normal” fit in with the context??

    Roma is just trolling Guardiola & his accent.
    I believe Pep said:
    “AS ROMA. –The money they’ve spent and they’re not in the Champions League. Are we (M. City) the only club in the world that in the last 10 or 50, 20 years (have just) spent money?”

    Admittedly, maybe his English is so bad, that he actually meant to point out:
    “IT’S NORMAL for the people outside of M. City to expect us to win CL after we spent so much money, and to see us not reach the Finals as a failure…
    Surely, after all we spent, nobody expects us to not advance from the group stage or to not play in the CL at all?
    So, what people expect of M. City, THAT’S NORMAL.
    But please, keep in mind that we are not the only spenders out there, and a lot of other clubs also failed to reach their goals and expectations.”

    Maybe he meant to say this and really didn’t mention Roma? 🙂

  6. My bad. I misheard “work” for “world”.

    I listened to it again, this time not on my one-speaker-phone. Here’s what Pep said:
    “…Because, the moment that we win the CL, it will be for the money we’ve spent. It will not be for the work that we did behind.
    (SARCASTICALLY IMITATES WHAT HATERS WOULD SAY ABOUT M. CITY WINNING THE TROPHY:) “That’s normal. They’ve spent the money & have now won the CL.”
    (CONTINUES WITH SARCASM:) We are the only club in the world that has, in the past 10-20 years, spent money.”
    (SHAKES HIS HEAD IN DISBELIEF)

    @Peregrin Philipp & @José
    I apologise. You were right. Pep did not mention Roma.
    Cheers!
