“We’ve made some good ground up after losing some precious time,” he told Radio Anch'io Lo Sport on Monday. “For now we have to get into the Champions League zone, then we’ll see.”

The Beneamata made a terribly poor start to the season and Ranieri was called in to replace Gian Piero Gasperini in September.

Having been in the bottom half of the standings for some time, the Nerazzurri have surged up the table with six straight wins.

“Everything went wrong at the start, especially because there were a lot of injuries,” continued the former Juve and Roma boss.

“I was fortunate to find a united squad that was hungry to prove its worth. It’s a pleasure to work with such champions.

“People said that we were finished, instead the players have demonstrated that they still have plenty to say and do.

“We are taking the side back to where they belong. We have done a lot, but we’ve not concluded anything yet.”

Ranieri was inevitably asked for his thoughts on Carlos Tevez, the Manchester City striker who is being strongly paired with a January move to San Siro.

“We now have a compact balance in the team,” the tactician responded. “We have to evaluate how much he can give and how much he will take away.”

Inter have confirmed that they have made City a €25m offer for the South American.
