Napoli have long been on James’ trail, but they have so far been unable to find an agreement with Madrid over the structure of his transfer.

After Marca claimed Atletico Madrid were ready to hijack the Partenopei’s negotiations for the Colombian, AS is now warning the southerners are running out of time to close a deal.

That is because Los Blancos would have been ‘unhappy’ with De Laurentiis’ claim that they were being unreasonable over James.

“We are all prepared to make sacrifices for James Rodriguez, but we ask Real Madrid to make them too,” the President told Sky Sport Italia.

“We’ve not given up, but in order to break the ice we need Madrid to consider that rather than have an unhappy player sitting around, they should send him out to play. Perhaps on loan.”

Nonetheless, the newspaper assures the midfielder will be theirs if they offer the €42m Madrid are looking for, as opposed to a loan with option to buy.

The 28-year-old is understood to have already agreed a €6.5m salary with Napoli.
