Edy Reja felt Atalanta deserved more than a point against second-placed Lazio, but “it could prove decisive.”

The Orobici dominated the first half and had taken the lead through Giuseppe Biava, but Marco Parolo grabbed an acrobatic late equaliser.

“Before the game I would’ve been happy with a draw, but in the first half we pegged Lazio back and caused them serious problems,” Reja told Sky Sport Italia.

“Marco Parolo and Danilo Cataldi start the moves, so we worked well to press them and stop the creative centres.

“It was an extraordinary performance against a team that is of the highest quality both technically and physically, as it’s not easy to find another game played at that tempo for 90 minutes.

“We are not safe yet, as looking at the fixture list it’s still tricky. We cannot let go, not even for a centimetre.

“I knew we couldn’t maintain the intensity of the first hour, as we played midweek and that was an exhausting match too.

“I do believe this point could prove to be decisive for our safety.”

As a former Lazio Coach, Reja continues to cheer on the Aquile in their bid to finish second.

“The run-in does not favour Lazio, because they’ve got to play Inter, Sampdoria and Roma. I think it will all depend on the Rome Derby.

“I experienced that fixture with great intensity. It was lovely that the Lazio players I’d worked with came to see me and give me a hug before the game. My bond with that team will remain forever, that’s the great thing about football.”
