It was a busy weekend for Italian referees and Fabio Maresca, the man in charge of Roma-Sassuolo, is surely the most criticised by Italian sports papers.

Il Corriere dello Sport call the referee “arrogant”, adding that his behaviour “was worst than a thousands mistakes.”

“The biggest one was when he didn’t send off [Sassuolo’s Pedro] Obiang for a reckless challenge on [Lorenzo] Pellegrini. VAR is also to be blamed as Marco Guida should have told the pitch referee Obiang deserved a red.”

Roma’s Pedro was sent off through a double yellow card instead, but the first one leaves “huge doubts,” the paper writes.

“First of all [Domenico] Berardi simulated, he was hit by Pedro in his chest, but he went down touching his face and is neck, secondly Pedro wins the ball possession without using strength.”

Roma did also deserve a penalty kick for a “clear handball of Kaan Ayhan” who stopped a cross of Leonardo Spinazzola.

Maresca’s only correct decision was to disallow a Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s goal for a foul of Edin Dzeko. The referee’s rating is 3 on Il Corriere dello Sport, 4 on La Gazzetta dello Sport and 5 on Tuttosport.

Milan-Sampdoria was another debated game. The Rossoneri were awarded a penalty kick in the first half for a handball of Jakub Jankto. A fair decision of the referee Gianpaolo Calvarese who punishes the Polish midfielder for “stretching his arm,” writes Tuttosport.

However, the three Italian sports paper write Sampdoria should have been awarded a penalty kick as well for a elbow of Alessio Romagnoli on Mikkel Damsgaard.

“Such challenges are always punished with a foul in the middle of the pitch, why not inside the penalty area?” writes Tuttosport.

The Blucerchiati could have been reduced to 10 men in the first half after a reckless tackle of Adrien Silva on [Davide] Calabria. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport the Portuguese midfielder risked a second yellow card.

Calvarese’s ratings is 5,5 on La Gazzetta dello Sport, 5 on Tuttosport and 6 on Il Corriere dello Sport.
