Jamie Redknapp believes Manchester United should have hired Antonio Conte as their coach: ‘They needed someone like him.’

The Italian tactician was linked with the Old Trafford job in October, but the Red Devils eventually decided to stick with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, offering Tottenham the chance to hire the former Inter and Juventus tactician.

Conte had rejected the Spurs job in the summer, only a few weeks after having left Inter by mutual consent.

However, he agreed to move to North London on an 18-month deal and signed his contract on November 2.

Manchester United eventually sacked Ole replacing him with Ralf Rangnick who lost his first game in charge of the Red Devils against Wolverhampton.

On the other hand, Conte is still unbeaten in eight Premier League games at Tottenham.

Former Premier League star Redknapp believes United should have hired the former midfielder when they had the chance.

“Why they didn’t get Antonio Conte when they could have done. They need someone like him,” he told Sky Sports UK as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“If you’re only there until the end of the season, you’re in there naked. The way he’s going now he won’t get another two years,” he added talking about Rangnick.

“If he wants to be there long-term he’s got a lot of decisions to make. There are a lot of players that he’s trying to shoehorn into the team.

“The ball should have got man of the match for Man United today because it had to do an incredible job to stay out there because everyone was given it away. When you look at it right now, they’re miles off it.”

  1. good question they made a mistake not sacking ole Gunnar earlier before they eventual do it was too late I will not watch United game again am tired of this disappointment . I get to say they only bear the name man United but they player are not United at all

  2. Yes Conte should have stayed with Italy but instead jumped ship for Chelsea this while DelVecchio was redeeming cans to get him the 10 mill, and then we got stuck with Ventura

  3. For some reason when the rumor of a potential Conte to ManU first started, guys like Gary Neville and even Craig Burley (ex CFC and Celtic) kept going on about Conte not being a “good fit”. Based on what? Did Neville his his pinky toe accidentally stepped on by Conte 20 years ago in a ManU vs Juve Friendly?

But was told that is is likely because ManU wouldn’t hire him because Conte’s not a “Yes, man”.

First Loss in 5 isn’t that bad but Newcastle should have been a Loss. Even Norwich, I think. Who plays 4-2-2-2 ? Ragnick needs to sort this out until Poch arrives.

Maybe Juve were right all along. Ronaldo disrupts the team and they play less as a team because he needs to be at the center of everything.

  4. As for Italy in 2016

We had a pretty bad team on paper but he squeezed everything out of them. Zaza? LOL ! Graziano Pelle? Eder? Giaccherini looked like Luka Modric for us ! Only lost to then World Champions Germany on PK’s in the QF. And it went to additional PK’s after some bad ones we took.

Will never forget how we were so superior to Belgium in our Opener. An almost flawless performance.
