Rafael Leao discusses the new tactical role at Milan, his current goal drought and the on-going talks for a new contract. ‘I am happy at Milan, we’ll see at the end of the season what happens.’

The head-to-head with Atalanta for position kicks off at San Siro at 19.45 GMT.

The Rossoneri are coming off three consecutive 1-0 victories between Serie A and the Champions League, ending the crisis they experienced in January.

“We are in good shape, but clearly victories give everyone more confidence on the field, we trust that we can play our game, even if it is against a tough opponent today. We know what we have to do and hope to get the right performance,” Leao told DAZN.

The Portugal international has not found the net in his last six games for Milan, but insists he enjoys the new role in the 3-4-3 formation rather than the old 4-2-3-1.

“I like the new position closer to the goal. I hit the post last time out, I like the movements, I’m closer to Oli and I think soon we can make the difference.”

Olivier Giroud said this week he is discussing a new contract and eager to remain with the Rossoneri, so is that also true of Leao?

“I am happy at Milan, I am talking to the people who need to talk, I cannot comment right now. We’ll see at the end of the season what happens.

“The most important thing right now is the game and ending the season in the right way.”

Leao’s contract only runs to June 2024, so if a deal is not struck by the summer, he will have to be sold or the club risks losing their most valuable asset as a free agent.

  1. Yeah, he’s definitely not staying. Would have made more from his sale if we got rid last summer. A shame in hindsight.
