Sampdoria boss Marco Giampaolo has showered praise on the evergreen Fabio Quagliarella. “He’s one of the greats like Del Piero and Totti.”

Samp can catapult themselves back into the European mix with another win this weekend, but standing in their way on Saturday are a Milan side competing for a Champions League spot.

“Milan are a good team,” Giampaolo said at a Press conference.

“They’re a team competing for a place in the Champions League. We had an experience against them two-and-a-half months ago.

“We had a great game against them and only the result was unfavourable. I’d be happy if the team repeated the same performance.

“It’s a luxury for Sampdoria to have had so many players called for the national teams, but it’s left us with a lot of waste.

“Our injury situation is in progress: I’ll have another run-through tomorrow before taking stock of our injures with Dr. Baldari.

“I hope to have Ekdal and Vieira back, otherwise Praet will play. I also expect Caprari and Barreto [to return]. We need everyone.

“I plan to play the best XI for this game, so they can be competitive both physically and mentally.

“Defrel is a player I really like. We signed him because of his characteristics and because we knew he would integrate into our system in the best way.

“He’s a good player, but he needs consistency like Gabbiadini.”

Quagliarella, meanwhile, became Italy’s oldest-ever goalscorer during the international break with his brace against Liechtensteiner.

“An incredible climate has been created around him,” added the Coach.

“He’s someone who receives affection and attention wherever he plays. He’s one of the greats like Del Piero and Totti.

“I talked to him after the international games and he’s in awe himself. This popularity raises his level of commitment because he to repay this acknowledgement of unlimited esteem and confidence.”
