Udinese have equalled their best ever start to a Serie A season and President Gianpaolo Pozzo isn’t holding back. ‘I believe we can get back into Europe, the way we did many times before.’

The Friulani have been a revelation and sit in third place, behind only joint leaders Napoli and Atalanta, after picking up victories over Roma and Inter.

“We won’t get ahead of ourselves, because we know the difficulties of Serie A and the strength of the metropolitan clubs with world class players and richer bank balances,” Pozzo told Udinese TV.

“We need to get players with potential and help them flourish rapidly.”

On 16 points after seven rounds, it is the best ever Udinese start to a season, matching their tally at this stage in 2000-01.

Curiously, one of the players in that squad was Andrea Sottil, who is now the coach in his debut Serie A management experience.

As for the present, Pozzo has his sights set firmly on European football.

“It’s a difficult league and not easy to climb this mountain, but I continue to believe we can get back into Europe, the way we did many times before, to enjoy ourselves in those tournaments.”
