Paolo Poggi, the previous record holder for the fastest Serie A goal, has congratulated Milan’s Rafael Leao who set a new record in Italy and in Europe’s leading leagues.

Leao opened the account against Sassuolo after just six seconds on Sunday, scoring the fastest goal in the history of Serie A and in the top five European leagues.

Paolo Poggi was the record holder for the fastest Serie A goal before Leao. He had found the net after eight seconds in a Fiorentina-Piacenza clash played at the Artemio Franchi in 2001.

The former Piacenza and Udinese striker congratulated the Portugal international on Twitter.

“Congrats to Rafael Leao for having beaten, or better, destroyed, my record for the fastest goal in Serie A, after 19 years. Well done.”

He also gave an interview to Radio 24 where he added: “I was asking myself why nobody hadn't beaten it already. There is always some sort of responsibility by the defence, but [Hakan] Calhanoglu and Leao produced some perfect technical gestures within a few seconds.”
