Striker Lukas Podolski says it's 'hard to explain' Inter's Europa League defeat, whilst turning his attention to Serie A.

The Polish-born German international was signed this winter to help the Nerazzurri out of their crisis, but the 5-2 aggregate defeat against Wolfsburg suggests the team and the player have a way to go.

The Polish-born German international was signed this winter to help the Nerazzurri out of their crisis, but the 5-2 aggregate defeat against Wolfsburg suggests the team and the player have a way to go.

Interviewed by the Press at the Rho Fiera event in Milan, Podolski admitted he has struggled to account for Inter's poor showing against the Germans.

“It's hard to explain it,” he said, as reported by FcInterNews.it. “But after a loss it isn't easy to say what went wrong.

“They're second in Germany and it wasn't an easy match to win. We played two games and lost both of them.

“Maybe we could have gone further, only to be knocked out at the next round. This is football.

“Now we have the championship, let's focus on that.

“It's true that we're out of all competitions, but there are still many matches to be played – 11 in Serie A, and if we win as many as possible, we still have a chance to qualify for Europe.

“If we lose, we're out. We must fight for it, we are the players and our target now is [qualifying for] the Europa League.

“I'm a professional and I know that when you're out of one cup you just have to concentrate on the next match.

“You must always think about the three points. It's easy when luck is on your side and you're winning, but when you're in a rut you must be more focused and aim for your objective, if you want to be in Europe again.

“I'm ready for all games. Not just the derby, all of them: they're all important.”

Podolski, who is on loan from Arsenal, was also asked whether he'd be returning to his home club at the end of the season.

“I don't know, all I think about is the next match. I have a contract with Arsenal and I'm waiting for the decision of the two clubs.

“My preference? We'll see. Right now I just want to focus on Inter.”
