Following on from Alessandro Florenzi’s departure from Coverciano last night, Tommaso Pobega has now become the latest player to leave the Azzurri training camp.

The 22-year-old Italian midfielder received his first call-up to the Italy senior team this international break following a strong season on loan at Torino. Pobega scored four goals and provided three assists in 33 Serie A appearances this season, proving himself to be tactically flexible and reliable.

As announced in an official statement, Pobega has withdrawn from the Azzurri training camp due to injury and he’ll now return to his club for treatment.

The statement also confirmed that Sandro Tonali, who is disqualified from Italy’s upcoming match against Germany, will remain with the squad until the end of the international break. Tomorrow morning he will join the squad on the trip to Düsseldorf, ahead of the match against Hansi Flick’s side.

A win for Italy against Germany would see them sit comfortably at the top of their Nations League group, a strong start to the new era.

5 thought on “Pobega also withdraws from Azzurri training camp”
  1. Surprised that Tonali would do this.

Other players would have left the team and started their vacation. Even more considering the match involves travel.

This sends a strong message to the team. It tells the group that they must be committed to the cause and the shirt and sacrifice.

This shows leadership by a 22 YO. Captain material, if I may say so.

I still have my doubts about thr veracity of the injuries of the 2 Lazio players.

  2. Much respect to Tonali. Agreed on the captaincy, but Italy unfortunately gives the captaincy to the player with the most caps. This is why Donnarumma had the armband the last few games, and Florenzi against Germany.

For Milan, I suspect he will be made vice captain along with Hernandez.

  3. Indeed.

Right now we are at a crossroads. Coinciding with players and by extension, the Captaincy now that Chiellini has retired. I hope they don’t give it to Bonucci. And I write this as a Juventino.

Right now they are doing it by committee. Different lineups and so the armband is rotated.

I do believe that will carry over into the 2 NL matches in September.

But in March when Qualifiers start, I think Mancio needs to name a Captain to signal the beginning of a project.

In Italy it usually is given to a Defender or GK, which I agree.

IMO, you don’t want to give it to a Midfielder or a Striker because that would suggest they have to play regardless of form and we can’t have that. Based on age, experience, talent, it really should go to Barella. Short term if Mancio calls him for Qualifiers it will be Verratti but that would mean the armband will still rotate.

Not sure how much Gianluca Mancini fits into his plans but when I watch him he exhibits leadership. Certainly more than Bastoni who should be our CB for the next decade and a player that should be a pillar.

    Likely go to Gigio.

Tonali would make a great Captain. Wasn’t there a match this year, maybe in the Derby where he was pushing a player away and squaring up to him? I think so. But with Tonali, would that mean Loca is forever his understudy?

Definitely has to be thought over.

  4. So far, from the the Nations League, one of Italy’s best-stand-out-players has been Pellegrini. Out of all of the new crop he has shown the most maturity and technical ability, I’ve never really been bothered about who gets captaincy, but I get the feeling that he is a solid candidate for this role in the near future, should it not go to a defender or goalkeeper.

  5. I agree – wonderful from Tonali.

About all of the withdrawals that have occurred, all I can say is I just hope they were all legitimate injuries. I say this as I think about my shoes, where I would practically die just to be a part oft he squad. Even a rotation member or practice member. Or B team call up. or just a training camp.

Finally, I’ve come around to Bonucci in recent times as a player. I used to never be a fan of his, more for his personality. But he’s an Azzurri legend after the EURO triumph. That being said, he is a terrible captain. He should have intervened when Jorginho took the ball for the 2nd time against Switzerland. Bonucci should demanded for Jorginho to step down immediately, hand the ball over to Bonucci, then Bonucci takes the penalty himself. Bonucci’s lack of action as captain during this moment forever disqualifies his candidacy for Azzurri captain.
