Juventus are said to be balking at the price of Alberto Aquilani's transfer from Liverpool and may allow the Italy international to return to Anfield.

Pirlo would represent a low-cost alternative capable of giving a jump in quality to Juventus' midfield even if he is approaching the twilight of his career.

La Stampa understands that Juventus general manager Beppe Marotta has made inquiries at Milan and that considering the good relationship between the two clubs, they are progressing well.

Milan have refused to grant Pirlo a new contract worth €5m a season, hence the player's agent Tullio Tinti sounding out Juventus to see if they would be interested.

Terms could apparently be reached at €3.5m a year.

If that might seem expensive for a 32-year-old, it would still be much cheaper than the transfer of Aquilani who currently earns €4m a season and would cost €16m to buy on a permanent basis.
